Management pitfalls: The Parking lot Departement

Just imagine: Its a sunny day and you, the CEO of a fast growing startup, enter the parking lot of your fancy office. Its the day new investors will visit and you are really focused on impressing them.

While walking across the lot you recognize how dirty it is, garbage „everywhere“.

First thing in the office is to call the facility manager – lets call her Theresa – and make sure she gets the mess cleaned up. Theresa calls Joe the custodian and makes sure he gets the message.

From now on Joe keeps the lot clean. When on vacation someone will step in and over time the bins get larger and fuller, equipment for cleaning is purchased and all in all the parking-lot-operations foster.

Your company ends up with a „parking lot department“ after 2 years with Joe as manager and a budget.

Am I serious?

Yes I am!

Each and everyone wants to do a good job.

Everyone wants to grow and everyone will optimize the tasks given.

If you ask your teams to collect waste, you get waste

(Don’t ask where all the waste may come from!)

I am guilty of founding „parking-lot-departments“ myself and have seen lots of them in larger enterprises.

Are you guilty as well?

What’s the solution?
